'Declan' Allardice

Horse of the Month July 2022

Our Horse of the Month for July is Declan! This handsome chap is a 27 years young Irish Sports horse belonging to Joy. Declan had always suffered from ‘horrendous’ chronic laminitis, and this is what prompted his vet to check for Cushing’s 7 years ago. The blood test showed that he did indeed have Equine Cushing’s disease, and Declan was immediately prescribed a daily tablet to treat this condition. Joy reports that once he had started on this medication ‘he hasn’t looked back! He lives a wonderful, retired life with his buddies and still manages a yeeha around the fields!!”

Over the last 7 years Declan has been regularly tested, and his dose has been increased to keep his Cushing’s well controlled. It’s really important to review the clinical condition as well as the blood test results of horses being treated for Cushing’s at least every 6 months in order to ensure their medication dose is appropriate. Joy says that the medication is “so worth it as he has a wonderful quality of life now that he’s being treated for Cushing’s!”
